RESEARCH METHODS FOR GLOBAL HEALTH SEMINAR (March 26-30, 2023 )


On March 26-30, 2023, a Research Methods for Global Health workshop was held at the University of Georgia in Tbilisi (Georgia). The workshop was organized as part of the Building Academic Capacity in Global Health in the Eastern Europe-Central Asia Region (BACE) project, which is implemented within the Erasmus+ CA2 CBHE program and of which TNMU is a partner.

The workshop was attended by Liudmyla Trushchenkova and Yurii Petrashyk, Associate Professors of the Department of Public Health and Health  Care Management of the Ivan Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, who are among the participants of the aforementioned BACE project from TNMU.

This workshop was an intermediate stage of a large-scale collaboration between nine universities from five countries (Ukraine, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Norway, and Germany) to build academic capacity in global health and develop the Research Methods for Global Health curriculum on for masters students, PhD students, and medical interns.

During the workshop, in order to build the teachers’ capacity in pedagogical and methodological approaches, participants listened to lectures and presentations by colleagues from the Department of Community Medicine of The Arctic University of Norway: Professor Tormod Brenn, Associate Professor Karin Charlotte Maria Rylander and Associate Professor Erik Eik Anda on the following topics: ANOVA, Causality and inference, Identification and consideration of confounding variables, Validity and systematic errors, Correlation, simple linear regression, Multiple linear regression, Regression models, Logistic regression, Cross-sectional studies, longitudinal studies, case-control studies, Systematic reviews, Survival analysis, Outbreak research/clinical epidemiology II etc. Each lecture was followed by exercises for the practical application of the material.

During the group discussions, the participants discussed the peculiarities and methods of student assessment at the represented educational institutions, as well as how students assess the quality of teaching and how institutions improve the educational process based on this assessment. At the end of the seminar, plans and objectives for the next meeting of all project participants, scheduled for May 2023, were formulated and preliminarily discussed.

It is worth reminding that the previous workshop under the BACE project was held on November 21-25, 2022, at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University in Tbilisi, Georgia. It was also attended by Associate Professors from the Ivan Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. During the course, to build the capacity of teachers on pedagogical and methodological approaches, the following lectures were held: Descriptive epidemiology (prevalence, incidence, mortality, mortality), Statistics R 1: Loading, introduction, basics, Statistics 1: Variable type, descriptive indicators, Statistics 2: Normal distribution, Statistics 3: Confidence interval, Statistics 4: t-test, hypothesis testing, Descriptive epidemiology: standardization of morbidity indicators, etc.
